Who, that, which

Révisons les subordonnes relatives…

Dans une subordonnée relative, on emploie généralement « who » pour les personnes et « that » ou « which » pour les choses. Notez que « which » est moins utilisé que « that » pour des objets directs.

Regardez ces exemples :

• We have a lot of friends who have visited Yellowstone.

• Where are the gloves that were on the chair?

• I lost my gloves, which I’d just bought.

On peut diviser les subordonnées relatives en deux groupes :

1- Celles qui définissent le nom auquel elles renvoient :

• We have a lot of friends who have visited Yellowstone.

• John works for a company which makes snow mobiles.

• We stayed in a very comfortable lodge that Jane recommended to us. (Notez qu'il n'y a pas de virgules.)

2- Celles qui donnent seulement une information supplémentaire à son propos :

• My sister Alice, who lives in the next town, is a ranger at Yellowstone.

• John told me about his new job, which he is really enjoying.

• We stayed at the EIk Lodge, which Jane recommended to us.

• Our friends John and Jane, who live in New York, visited Yellowstone last year. (Notez que l'on met des virgules pour souligner le fait que cette information est supplémentaire.)

Ce qu'il faut savoir :

Avec les phrases du groupe (1), on peut 1 remplacer « who » par « that » :

• The man who/that lives next door is a ranger at Yellowstone National Park.

On peut également omettre « that/ who/which » lorsqu'il s'agit de l'objet (c'est-à-dire quand on traduit « that/ who/which » par « que » en français) :

• We stayed in a very comfortable lodge Jane recommended to us.

• This is the souvenir 1 bought.

• He's the guide we had.

• These are the skis I hired.

Avec les phrases du groupe (2), « that » ne peut pas remplacer « who » :

• My sister Alice, who lives in the next town, is a ranger at Yellowstone.

Et on ne peut pas omettre « that/who/ which » :

• John told me about his new job, which he is reallyenjoying.

• We stayed at the EIk Lodge, which Jane recommended to us.
