Here are some useful phrases to help you solve travel problems…
Conversation
Ferry operator: l'm sorry Sir, but there's a small problem. The 21.15 ferry is full.
Car driver: But I booked a month ago by Internet. Look, it says so here on this printout.
Ferry operator: Yes, I do apologize. We've had some technical hitches with online reservations.
Car driver: So what are you doing to rectify the situation?
Ferry operator: I suggest that you come back tomorrow morning, I’ll make sure that you get on the 7.30 ferry.
Car driver: But we're only going to stay in Jersey for two nights. Who can I ask about this mix-up? Who's in charge here?
Ferry operator: I am, but I’m not responsible for overbookings. I’m sure there's a solution, though... Let's see... You've got your bikes and rucksacks with you. How about leaving your car on the mainland? I’ll refund the vehicle fare, of course, and there's no charge for bikes on the ferry.
Car driver: That's not exactly what we'd planned. But, I suppose, if there's no alternative...
Ferry operator: Believe me, Jersey is a cyclist's paradise. In fact, you’ll probably be very glad that this little hiccup in our usually trouble-free service happened in the first place...
